What are SSL certificates
SSL stands for Secure Socket Layer. The SSL protocol is also known as Electronic Certificate and guarantees the secure exchange of data between a website and the visitor’s browser in a way that prevents malicious theft of data such as login information, passwords or credit card details.
We know that a website is using an SSL certificate when it displays a small icon with a green padlock in the address bar of the website and the prefix “https”, and in some cases the logo of the company that owns the website. SSL certificates are provided by data protection and certificate companies called Certificate Authorities. These companies are responsible for identifying the website’s data and thus guaranteeing the secure transfer of data between these websites and their users.
SSL certificates are now absolutely essential
According to an official announcement by Google, the SSL certificate is now required for all websites. In fact, Chrome, which is the most widely used browser, will negatively mark all sites that do not use encryption, i.e. do not have an active SSL security certificate. Sites that do not have an SSL certificate risk being flagged by Google with a red danger symbol and a “not secure” label and will risk falling in Google’s rankings.
